Ivy - The in-between coat

Posted by Sally McLaren on

Is it a jacket?

Is it a coat?

Is it a cardigan?

Is it a shirt?

No, its all 4 rolled into 1 and is perfect for this time of the year.

Read on for my ways to wear this seasons must-have in-between styles to see you through the transition from summer to autumn and into winter, and how to style them with your Ivy t’s.

So, it's that beautiful time of the year again. Summer has definitely said its goodbyes, the sudden colour changes are all around us, the temperature is fluctuating daily and the leaves are dropping. We can be certain that autumn is in the air.

At the last count, we had 53 conkers in various tubs around the kitchen. Having started school last month, my eldest insists on taking a few of her shiny treasures into school each day to share amongst her friends. I think my kids love Autumn the most out of any season because of the natural gems they can gather when we are out and about. And amongst the anti-bac wipes, bottles of hand gel, masks and empty snack wrappers, the bottom of my handbag is scattered with acorns.

I'll get to the point. Despite being sad to bag up the shorts and sandals until next summer, I do love the season and wardrobe change that Autumn brings. The pieces that I genuinely miss in the warmer months are my jeans (more on that in another blog soon) and my coats.

However, I don't dig out my winter coats for another month or so as otherwise, I don't feel the benefit when the weather really does change. And, I love making the most of my in-between pieces which are just perfect for this time of year. The blazers and jackets, the coatigans, and the very on trend right now, shackets.

Here I want to show some easy ways to build your layers using key transitional pieces, always using, of course, your Ivy t-shirts as the foundation layer to each look.

Here I wear our NEW charcoal marl Dotty v with black panel leggings. You can see how the t-shirt drapes and hangs perfectly down the body and has enough length to confidently be worn with leggings - the rear is even longer than the front too so there is coverage exactly where you want it.
I begin to build the layers by adding an over sized denim shirt and finish with a brushed cotton check shacket in gorgeous shades of pink and ecru with grey that works so well back with our charcoal marl t. There are so many shackets around right now - this is from one of our boutique stockists Lulu & Moon.
I have finished the look with these gorgeous khaki suede boots which I know I am going to be living in this season.
Rather than discarding them until next spring, making the most of your lighter colours is key as we move from one season to the next and I love how my ecru jeans work so well with this dark grey unlined cocoon coat. Adding the denim shirt lifts the look when worn with our must-have black Maggie crew.
Another shacket from Lulu & Moon. By pairing the ecru shacket with our Mabel Breton crew it takes our short sleeved t-shirt effortlessly into Autumn.
This time, I am using the shacket as the mid layer, by adding a bright unstructured long jersey jacket over the top. There are some days when bright colours are needed. This bright coral instantly lifts your mood and the mood of others too! I always get compliments and plenty of smiles when I wear it and I genuinely think it cheers people up!
Switch our Breton for a plain white Layla crew with the same coral jacket and change the boots for trainers and you get another great day time look.
Jeans are my go-to 95% of the time, and I love the simplicity of blue denim worn with our new charcoal marl Mabel low crew. I've layered a checked shacket over the top and finished with a pair chunky black boots.
A coatigan is another essential item that you need in your Autumn wardrobe. They are usually unlined which means they are great for in-between temperatures. As we head into Autumn, it doesn't mean that you can't wear any of your spring/summer pieces, like this lightweight blue midi skirt. Here I've added our charcoal marl Dotty v, a chunky black boot and grey longline coatigan to take a spring look into the Autumn. On chillier days, just add a layer of knitwear too.
I just love the ochre colour of this unlined coatigan, which really pops when worn with these black dungarees with our Maggie grey marl crew layered underneath.
If you've got a fair amount of joggers in your wardrobe, but always keep them for wearing around the house, why not have a comfy day and wear them out and about too? Add a pair of chunky boots and an oversized shacket layered over your white Mabel crew and you're good to go.
For a slightly smarter look, I've taken my classic black blazer (which everyone needs in their wardrobe), layered our charcoal marl Mabel crew underneath, with a knitted skirt. Boots work well with this look, either a slouchy pair with a low heal or animal print buckled boot.

Ultimately, I love the multiple layers and the outfit possibilities you can get from trying them in different combinations.

Until next time,

Sally x
